When one gifts a quilt, it is always hoped it will be well received. Particularly when it is a surprise.
Looks like someone approves of this quilt. (The human owner also seems pleased.)

Meet Honey Hush, a striking throw quilt made using a Honey Bun (roll of 42 WOF 1-1/2″ strips) and small pieces of multi-colored solids. Yes, just using scraps would also work beautifully. Just have FUN with it.
This quilt has 120 blocks.
NOTE: If you are using precuts, I suggest taking measurements at each step and trimming as needed. Precision can be difficult when working with precuts.
Each block is created with:
- 1 1-1/2″ square for the center
- 2 1-1/2″ squares and 2 1-1/2″x3-1/2″ strips
- 2 3″ squares, cut on the diagonal (NOTE: I ...
Welcome to the world, Declan! (FYI, your name is pronounced DECK-lan, which I didn't know until your grandma, my friend Lynn, told me about you!)
I made you one of my "Everything in the World" quilts, though sadly some of this stuff is no longer in this world (like Freddy Mercury, RBG and dinosaurs), and some stuff has never been in the world, depending how you define reality (Mighty Mouse, unicorns, the Golden Snitch.)
In case you take an interest in quilting some day, here's how I made this.It started with a box of hand-me-down Half Square Triangles.
And an IDEA (this is based on the layout she called Diamonds).
And now a quilt! As the original maker likely didn’t plan for this to happen, some of the Half Square Triangles didn’t have much contrast. I am still pleased with the results.
It finishes at 56″x64″, a nice size lap quilt.
And, finished IS finished.

A variation on a Churn Dash block seemed a good solution.
Cutting directions for each 12″ Dash block follow.
- Background: 2 5″ squares, 4 2-1/2″x4-1/2″ rectangles
- Primary Fabric: 2 5″ squares, 1 4-1/2″ square.
- Inner Dash Bar: 8 2-1/2″ squares (or, separate the strips already sewn together into sets of 2). NOTE: If you have a charm pack, it could be a good starting place for this quilt. Just cut into ...

Saturday brought a long sewing day while I watched some football.
I improved my ironing set up.
And finished nearly half of a quilt top. Being prepped is critical as I don’t see how to incorporate a cutting area.
I do love the machine. It has responded beautifully to the care given.

The top is assembled, and I hope to have it quilted soon. YAY! I love to find purpose for fabric.
read moreThis was so much fun to do. I think those projects that just happen because you feel like it in the moment are often the best.
Cheri passed on a project, or a potential project. Looks like it needs a second chance.
Hmm…what can I make with this?
ps–Yes, using a lint roller to keep strips organized is pretty genius.

It is interesting. But difficult. They are both fairly large quilts.
I have to constantly remind myself that, when it comes to squares, halving the length of the sides does NOT half the area, it reduces it to one-quarter the original. Likewise, doubling: 2×2=4, but 4×4=16.
Thank you, Vicky, for the suggestion. Looking at them together gives me perspective.
ps–The tutorial for ...

This is the Windspinner pattern by Kim Diehl in the book Simple Whatnots III. Times 25. You can learn more about the process by searching for BIG DIEHL in the box to your right.
The colors work together mostly as I hoped, with the possible exception of a few of the larger gold pieces that stand out a bit more than I intended. Hopefully the green binding helped tone it down.
The backing was a great find! An entire bolt of ...

With the start of school and events in my life generally, my sewing time has been significantly reduced the past few weeks. But, I did finally get the binding attached to the Big Diehl quilt last night.
I am hopeful for binding time this weekend. And a true finish soon. Remember: Quilting doesn’t really take patience, it requires persistence. If you don’t give up, you will finish.

I am working on a tutorial for a charm pack baby/throw quilt. This is the first draft.
This one used 4″ squares and finishes at 35-1/2″.
It is a cheerful use of scraps and will be donated to the children’s hospital.
It may be a while before the tutorial is ready, but that will give you time to gather up a likely charm pack and some background fabric. Any suggestions for a name?
read moreIt started out as an untidy pile of promising pieces.
Now it is a finished quilt.
The common denominator number is 4″. That is the finished size of the blocks, except the star blocks, which are 8″. It went together fairly quickly, once I had the idea.
I am so happy with the finished product. Someone out there will be happy to receive this piece of sunshine.
